What A Comic Show!

Comic-book nerds, rejoice! Thanks to a comic themed restaurant and the hippest trendiest new hangout in town.  With a hanging upside down action figurine of Spiderman on the window glass and a life sized frame of Superman, comic-book fans will feel right at home at What a Comic Show (WACS). When you walk into a place like this, it brings you back to your childhood and makes you remember why you got into comics. Here you’ll get the flashback of those days where comic characters were our real heroes and how we mimicked ninja by using scales as swords to supernatural devil looking investigator, Hellboy.  Being a hardcore comic fanatic, I was in love with their ambiance. There are comics everywhere- on the walls, collage on the table tops, and even full issues on the table to read while you wait. It was indeed a joy when I spotted my favorite Iron man’s action figure. The walls display countless memorabilia from Marvel & other comics, including Mickey Mouse, head busts, figurines and movie posters. It provides excellent customer service in a friendly home style environment.  Customers can play any of the board games at any time. The restaurant is essentially my dream fan-cave brought to life!

Located at Safdarjung Development Area Market near Delhi, IIT Gate, this new age restaurant started by food lover and comic world fan- Pooja Moirangthem is one of a kind. Being a budding entrepreneur, Pooja has been in the Travel Industry for almost a decade and then decided to hang her boots as she always had the zest to start a unique and rejuvenating enterprise. The owner have meticulously handpicked and selected all the components of the business. They even organize live acoustic musical nights, screening of super blockbusters in the genre of animation, superheroes costume parties and much more.

I sat down and pursue the drinks menu to see what reference I can catch. A mocktail named PHANTOM PUNCH pops out immediately, it is a blend of lime soda, brown sugar with ginger syrup. Super healthy and refreshing drink. Then I opted for FRANSKENSTEIN BLOOD which did not suit my taste bud. I felt the portion of tomato juice was too strong.

To get the complete essence of both CONTINENTAL and ORIENTAL delicacies, I chose VEG PLATTER from each. Former platter consists of crispy French fries, potato wedges, mushroom triangle toast which was a perfect delight and simple bruschetta with tasty topping. While the latter has spring rolls, stuffed potato, chilly paneer which were good but shabalay and wontons were a letdown. On the recommendation of our pretty host, I tried CRISPY CORN PEPER SALT and BAM! It was an outburst of crunch and flavors. Here, I can say that spiciness was on point.

Then I had WHITE SAUCE MUSHROOM PASTA which again was brilliant. Up next was freshly made EGG SANDWICH with a side of fries, which for once was just the right amount. It has a taste that lingers and will make you want to revisit.

Like we all know a food review is incomplete without a sweet take, so for dessert, I had CHOCOLATE BROWNIE with CHOCOLATE ICE-CREAM which was good.

Clearly, this is a different kind of establishment. One that makes everyone feel welcome. It is a geeked out nerd fest with great food. Like Jim Zub said ‘Comic is social’ and so is WACS.

On a comical note I would like to add ‘May the FOOD be with you’!

Now that I’ve given you a good view of the restaurant, let’s hop on to the topic which i enjoy writing about the most, food. As soon as I was seated on my table, the server asked if I would like to go by the menu or chef’s choice. So unlike always I decided to choose from the menu and then go with chef’s choice. I ordered their Indian Tandoori platter as I was told that it was their best selling items. This platter had Kasundi fish tikka, Chicken tikka, Afghani Chicken & Mutton seekh Kebab. It’ll be rather unfair to say that out of all this something in particular was my favorite but if I have to tell then it’ll be Kasundhi Fish Tikka. Such beautiful flavors and spices are used in this fish that I could keep eating it.

Next on the table was steamed fish cake, Chicken Dimsums, Spicy Hot Prawns, Chicken Shitake, Pizza Punjabi Kukkad, Tamarind Tofu Cups, Mushroom Galouti & Kesari Paneer. I would like to draw your attention to one unique thing that I had noticed while having the food and that is Ambrosia has its specialty laying in dishes that involves fish. You’ll definitely find their fish way tastier than any other meat dish, this doesn’t mean other dishes aren’t good but my personal favorite was fish.

Dimsums

I tried Dimsums too but they didn’t do the work for me. Although the filling was tasty and had perfect amount of filling but the outer covering was too thick and couldn’t support the filling. Kesari Paneer, is one dish I would recommend to everyone. Mushroom Galouti & Tamarind Tofu cups are again something to look forward to, both these dishes have a very unique presentation as well as taste. You’ll probably think that those cups are something spicy and filled with veggies but these one bite tofu cups are full of taste and they just disappear before you realize.

Chicken Meat Ball Peri Peri was quite refreshing a new on the taste palette for me. The meat balls were not too dry and hard to chew, which is the case at most places.

Ambrosia has some very different and interesting cocktails for everyone. I tried two kinds of cocktails, one from the menu and the other that was specially curated by the bar tender considering the fact that I was bored of normal cocktails. Love Birds & Betel Bliss are the cocktails I tried. What makes these cocktails interesting is the fact that while love birds is an amalgamation of sparkling wine, build up & raspberry syrup, refreshes your senses and gives you a sense of elite drinking, betel bliss works as a “Pan” in liquid form. Muddled, vodka, fresh betel leaf, rose petals, cardamon and club soda, all this is combined for your perfect Indian cocktail. FYI I’m not a pan fan nor can I stand it and still I finished this drink and loved it the most.

As I always say, I never miss out on the desserts and this time again I made it a point to try two of them. Sticky Toffee pudding with Toffee Sauce and Carrot & Walnut cake with philadelphia frosting. Did you read too much toffee somewhere? The toffee pudding was overtly sweet and too much toffee made it so. Maybe a salted caramel topping could do away with the sweetness. The carrot cake neutralized the sweetness and it was exactly how a carrot cake is supposed to be.

This place is worth every penny and being in the heart of the city makes it even more worthwhile!

Harry’s New Menu by Chef Vicky Ratnani

Singapore’s favorite bar- Harry’s has launched its all new menu to cater to the strong bar culture that the brand is grounded in. Curated by Celebrity Chef Vicky Ratnani, the food menu comprises of Greens, Bar Nibbles, Mains and Desserts for the foodies to celebrate the New Year.

Get ready to be spoiled for choice with delectable yet healthy ‘Greens’ including Watermelon & Feta and Caesar Salads; relish over 30 varieties of ‘Bar Nibbles’ such as Buffalo Chicken Winglets, Fondue Stuffed Mushroom, Smoking Hot Sausages and Crispy Chilli Potatoes.

Take your pick of yummy signature ‘Sliders’ or dig into ‘Bowls’ with a variety of Asian, Italian and Indian options to choose from.

Harry’s has been on my list of favorite’s since the time they opened up their Khan Market outlet which is above Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. This place for some reason can never go wrong with their food and drinks and just like any other day I visited Harry’s with the same zeal and enthusiasm this time too for the launch of its new gastronomic menu. Chef Vicky Ratnani had flown down from Mumbai especially for this launch and paid attention to each of the person present at the launch.

Our evening was started with some cocktails from the new menu. I decided to go with White Sangria as it is my current poison these days. The sangria as expected was freshly prepared with all the fruits soaked in white wine but to my surprise it was on the sweeter side. After much discussion we asked the server and he said the drink had mango juice in it. Well I’ve had sangria’s at a lot of places now and I’m very well aware of the taste and contents but this was first of its kind having mango juice. I’d leave it on to you people for the feedback because food is something very personal I believe. For me it was way too sweet for my taste buds.

The next drink was Dirty Harry made with vodka, litchi juice and some caster sugar. Again, not a very impressive trick.

For the starters we had Ratatouille Stuffed Mushroom Caps, Vietnamese Spring Roll, Wasabi Cottage Cheese, Mumbai style Potato Wedges, Fisherman Basket etc.

The mushroom caps were surprisingly delicious and it was more like “You didn’t want to know what’s there inside it and just gulp it down” as said by one of the bloggers while eating the caps. And I most definitely second her on this thought. They were the best I’ve had so far. Vietnamese Rolls were though a little loosely packed, tasted good. Wasabi Cottage Cheese were again a hit on the spot dish, with perfect tinge of wasabi in it.

Fisherman Basket and Potato wedges were perfectly cooked and spiced dishes which were amongst the most enjoyed and loved by everyone from the new menu. Although I’m not a potato person, I thoroughly enjoyed eating these wedges with tangy sauce.

Watermelon & Feta salad is what I had next. After much discussion and speculations all of us decided to order this salad, and my my such a wonderful salad it was. But the only trouble I had was with the feta cheese, it was a tad bit on the harder side as compared to how cheese is supposed to be in this salad.

From the main course I had Thai Curry with Rice. As expected the curry was beautifully made with vegetables and complimented well with sticky rice.

Desserts are the best part of any and every meal. For a person like me who definitely has a mini stomach especially for desserts, it’s difficult to leave without tasting at least one out of many and oh boy this dessert swept me away from my feet. The Volcano Chocolate Cake with flamed rum was one mind boggling dessert I had or you could imagine. You gotta eat to believe it! Highly recommended by me, a 10/10 to chef for this amazing addition.

Next time you are in khan Market or SelectCity walk and looking forward to spend some quality time over drinks and food, head over to Harry’s and you won’t be disappointed.
