What A Comic Show!

Comic-book nerds, rejoice! Thanks to a comic themed restaurant and the hippest trendiest new hangout in town.  With a hanging upside down action figurine of Spiderman on the window glass and a life sized frame of Superman, comic-book fans will feel right at home at What a Comic Show (WACS). When you walk into a place like this, it brings you back to your childhood and makes you remember why you got into comics. Here you’ll get the flashback of those days where comic characters were our real heroes and how we mimicked ninja by using scales as swords to supernatural devil looking investigator, Hellboy.  Being a hardcore comic fanatic, I was in love with their ambiance. There are comics everywhere- on the walls, collage on the table tops, and even full issues on the table to read while you wait. It was indeed a joy when I spotted my favorite Iron man’s action figure. The walls display countless memorabilia from Marvel & other comics, including Mickey Mouse, head busts, figurines and movie posters. It provides excellent customer service in a friendly home style environment.  Customers can play any of the board games at any time. The restaurant is essentially my dream fan-cave brought to life!

Located at Safdarjung Development Area Market near Delhi, IIT Gate, this new age restaurant started by food lover and comic world fan- Pooja Moirangthem is one of a kind. Being a budding entrepreneur, Pooja has been in the Travel Industry for almost a decade and then decided to hang her boots as she always had the zest to start a unique and rejuvenating enterprise. The owner have meticulously handpicked and selected all the components of the business. They even organize live acoustic musical nights, screening of super blockbusters in the genre of animation, superheroes costume parties and much more.

I sat down and pursue the drinks menu to see what reference I can catch. A mocktail named PHANTOM PUNCH pops out immediately, it is a blend of lime soda, brown sugar with ginger syrup. Super healthy and refreshing drink. Then I opted for FRANSKENSTEIN BLOOD which did not suit my taste bud. I felt the portion of tomato juice was too strong.

To get the complete essence of both CONTINENTAL and ORIENTAL delicacies, I chose VEG PLATTER from each. Former platter consists of crispy French fries, potato wedges, mushroom triangle toast which was a perfect delight and simple bruschetta with tasty topping. While the latter has spring rolls, stuffed potato, chilly paneer which were good but shabalay and wontons were a letdown. On the recommendation of our pretty host, I tried CRISPY CORN PEPER SALT and BAM! It was an outburst of crunch and flavors. Here, I can say that spiciness was on point.

Crispy Corn pepper salt

Then I had WHITE SAUCE MUSHROOM PASTA which again was brilliant. Up next was freshly made EGG SANDWICH with a side of fries, which for once was just the right amount. It has a taste that lingers and will make you want to revisit.

Like we all know a food review is incomplete without a sweet take, so for dessert, I had CHOCOLATE BROWNIE with CHOCOLATE ICE-CREAM which was good.

image6 (1)

Clearly, this is a different kind of establishment. One that makes everyone feel welcome. It is a geeked out nerd fest with great food. Like Jim Zub said ‘Comic is social’ and so is WACS.

On a comical note I would like to add ‘May the FOOD be with you’!

The Dumplings & Chinese Bread, New Menu at Mamagoto

Cheese Veggie Bun

Cheese Veggie Bun

Mamagoto, the much loved Pan Asian restaurant chain by Kabir Suri and Rahul Khanna of Azure Hospitality that started its first outlet at New Delhi in 2009, celebrated its five year milestone with the addition of the quintessential Asian staple The Dumpling & Chinese Bread, albeit with a “Mamagoto Special” twist.

Mamagoto, made eating Pan Asian cuisine a fun and memorable culinary experience, has always been at the helm of innovations that do not compromise on freshness or wholesomeness of each dish. Eating at Mamagoto always leaves one with a sense of satisfaction and adventure that keeps one coming back for more.

Traditional Pecking Dumpling

Traditional Pecking Dumpling

The New Dumplings and Mantau (Chinese Bread) menu follows in the same thread: hearty comfort food that surprises you pleasantly with its experimental pairing of ingredients, textures and tastes.

Vegetarian Jungle Dumpling

Vegetarian Jungle Dumpling

The Dumpling Menu is pure fun with great taste, allowing you to enjoy a mini meal of Dim sums: Street Style Spicy Dumpling (minced vegetable/chicken or shrimp), Traditional Peking Dumpling, Jungle Dumpling (chive infused vegetable or minced shrimp dumpling, topped with ginger, mint and soy sauce), Old School Gyoza(Lightly pan fried vegetable or chicken dumplings with a spicy “momo” sauce).

Though I loved the dumplings thoroughly there is one thing that remains the center of my concern and that is, the sauce makes the steamed dumplings soggy and the pan fried ones had a little layer of oil which was mixed with these dumplings and again made them too soggy.

Poaky Apple Mantau Makeover

Poaky Apple Mantau Makeover

The light, almost cloud like “Mantaus” come with stuffing’s such as Porky Apple Mantau Makeover (shredded pork belly, caramelised apple infused with red chilli, served in a mantau), Tokyo Metro Mantau (Crumb crusted slivers of aubergine or chicken with wasabi mayo and Japanese BBQ sauce served in a mantau), Cheesy Veggie Bun(stir fried pad choi, pine nuts ,spices and fresh cheese, served in a closed bao).

Old School Gyoza

Old School Gyoza

The mantau’s were perfectly stuffed and the filling was an absolute stunner but the bread was way too fermented which gave me a taste of south Indian rice dumpling (Idli) and the bread was almost over powering the filling inside.

Chinese Chicken Puff (minced chicken wok tossed in a 5 spice aroma and baked into a puff) and Char Siu Puff (The classic sweet “Char Siu” style vegetable or pork stuffed puff).

Char Sui Puff

Char Sui Puff

These puff’s can be mistaken for the french pastry but no it’s not that. These are traditional sweet char sui puff which is either filled with minced chicken or veggies. At first I was confused about the sweetness but when I asked about it then I was told that that is how they are made, a little sweeter. If you don’t like the sweetness in your food then you can probably avoid this.

Mango Coconut Sago Pudding

To give that perfect satisfying end to the meal Mamagoto has introduced the seasonal Mango Coconut Sago Pudding.

With these new additions, Mamas ready to spoil you once again. Savour these at the Mamagoto outlets in Delhi at :

Black Burger Made its Way to India

Black Burger

Black Burger

After making a strong culinary statement in developed markets like the US and Japan, the ‘Black Burger’ has made its dramatic debut in the Indian market. Barcelos, the South African casual dining eatery, has introduced the Black burger in its outlet at Khan market, New Delhi, promising more than just a color change for the traditional burger aficionados. The Black burger is not just an experiment in color, but has also significantly redefined the traditional burger, with its texture and overall presentation. It is no secret, why the Black Burger has been a rage in the US and the Japanese markets and now India will be the third country in the world to enjoy this quirky offering.

Peri Black Beauty

Peri Black Beauty

Barcelos has introduced two variants of Black Burger i.e. Peri Black Beauty (veg) priced at Rs155 and Peri Black magic (Chicken) priced at Rs195. Available in two variants, black burger will have peri mayo in it.

Peri Black Magic

Peri Black Magic

Barcelos serves this exclusive black burger with peri peri sauces in four variants like Supa Peri, Veri Peri, Mild Peri and Tangy Lemon. After talking to Rohit Malhotra, GM Operations, Barcelos India said, “We are delighted to introduce Black Burger for the first time ever in india. Barcelos has not used any ink or artificial color to darken the bun but the herbs and organic ingredients used in it gives it a black color. We have kept the nutritional value of burger in consideration and not used any artificial color to it. Black burger is unique in itself due to its color and it will definitely intrigue the food lovers in the capital to try it.”

Peri Black Magic

Peri Black Magic

I tasted both the burgers and personally I loved the bun individually and the non veg burger was outstanding. Though the veg one was a tad bit disappointing, considering that all it had was soya and potato which made the patty way to soft and at the end the patty was falling apart. As I suggested this to the GM operations, Mr. Rohit, he said he will definitely look into the matter and work on it.

All in all it, this Black burger is here to stay!

All you need to know about Barcelos, Khan Market

Barcelos, khan Market

Barcelos, khan Market

With a single operation founded in Pretoria, South Africa in 1993, Barcelos has grown exponentially which led it to start franchising in 1998. It has been expanding continuously and became a household name the world over ever since. Barcelos enjoys its presence in 17 countries with 120 outlets. To ensure continuity and excellence throughout the brand, the founders of the brand, namely Costa Marzi, Johan Van Eyk and Beverley Vaskys, are all still actively involved in the operations of the company. Company has a service office in London with its group offices in Centurion, South Africa as well as national distribution centers in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and in Gaborone, Botswana.

Barcelos, Khan Market

Barcelos, Khan Market

Barcelos is famous for its flame grilled Peri Peri menu that has won people’s heart in the capital and has been getting rave reviews from their first restaurant at Khan Market in central Delhi. They have an extensive menu of both veg & non- veg. But the Portuguese food here is dominantly for chicken lovers with a good amount of veg options available too. For starters I had Chicken Platter and Stuffed Mushrooms & Potato. The platter had chicken liver, boneless thighs, chicken wings and drumsticks all cover in tangy lemon sauce. First thing that I liked was the sauce was not just coated on the outside but it was there till the bone. I’m not a potato lover but these stuffed potatoes and mushrooms were better than any non beg dish ( this doesn’t mean I didn’t like non veg!).

Chicken platter

Chicken platter

Talking about the chicken platter, I’ve tried various chicken wings, drumsticks etc. but the taste and flavors one gets at Barcelos are different and rare to find.

In the main course, we ordered from the Portuguese specialities, Chicken Trinchado with rice- an exotic Portuguese gravy dish. With pepper and onion tossed in special gravy with chicken breasts cut in pieces. This dish is another must have. I’ve hardly seen any restaurant using Indian spices like tesz patta and jaiphal in their dishes and I had thought that only Indian origin restaurants do that but Barcelos proved me wrong.

Chicken Trinchado

Chicken Trinchado

The quantity is worth every penny and standing in Khan Market this place has made a niche for itself. The desserts and drinks are another highlight. I tried the Cheesecake and Tiramisu. Both were great but my vote will definitely go to Tiramisu. The Mocktails though were a bit on the sweeter side.
